Tub-to-shower conversions and tile showers built on a waterproofed pan

VCS Construction and Remodeling handles shower remodeling in Houston, Texas. We turn tubs into walk-in showers and build custom tile showers. We also replace an old shower or tub in the same spot. Our own crew tears out the old one. Master plumbers on our team move or replace the drain and the shower valve. Then our crew builds and waterproofs the pan and the walls before the tile and glass go in. Whole-room work, like a new vanity or tile floor, is on our bathroom remodeling page.

We have been contracting in Houston since 2007, with over 20 years of hands-on experience. Custom bathrooms are a big share of what we build. One contractor handles both the plumbing and the finish work on your shower. We remodel showers in Harris County, in places like Houston Heights, Bellaire, West University Place and Jersey Village. The estimate is free, and we set a date after the estimate. Call (713) 828-3097.

What Goes Into Shower Remodeling in a Houston Home?

Shower remodeling starts with the tear-out, and our own crew handles it. Out comes the old tub, the fiberglass or acrylic insert, or the old tile and a leaking pan. For a tub-to-shower conversion or a bigger shower, our master plumbers move or replace the drain and valve. When a tub stays a tub, we replace the tub or the tub-shower combo in the same spot. Our master plumbers connect the new tub to the drain and the valve.

Next, our own crew builds the shower pan with a waterproof membrane. The new pan gets its flood test before any tile covers it. Waterproofing goes behind every shower wall too, including any recessed niche for shampoo bottles. Then our crew sets the tile you picked on the walls and on the shower floor. A shower replacement follows these same steps once the old insert or the leaking pan is gone.

We build walk-in showers with a low curb at the entry and frameless glass. A tub-shower combo can take a glass door or panel too. Our crew sets the shower fixtures and the vent fan, and we duct the fan all the way outside. Last, our own crew patches and paints the drywall the job opened. For a curbless roll-in shower, grab bars or a walk-in tub, see our accessible bathroom remodeling page.

What Does the City of Houston Require for Shower Remodeling?

Inside the City of Houston, a new shower has to meet the City's amended residential code. It is the 2021 International Residential Code with Houston's amendments, in effect since January 1, 2024. A shower compartment needs at least 1,024 square inches of interior floor area. It must also be at least 30 inches across at its narrowest, measured from the finished inside surfaces. Houston's amendments set the shower drain outlet at no less than 2 inches in diameter. Hinged shower doors must open outward.

The City's code has an exception for tub-to-shower conversions. When a standard 30 by 60 inch bathtub is replaced, the shower may be as narrow as 25 inches inside. It must then have at least 1,300 square inches of floor area. The code also requires a flood test of the shower pan. The pan is filled with water to the level of the rough threshold and tested for watertightness. The test happens before any tile goes on.

The City's Residential Repairs guideline, Form CE-1058, lists tiling as finish work that needs no permit. The same guideline says any replacement of plumbing fixtures requires permits. When the job needs a plumbing permit, our master plumbers pull it and we meet the inspector. The City says a plumbing inspector must approve that work before the project is finalized. Its plumbing inspections include rough and final inspections. Bellaire and West University Place run their own permit offices.

Tub-to-Shower Conversions on Houston Slabs and Pier-and-Beam Houses

Census Bureau figures for the City of Houston put the median year a housing unit was built at 1982. They also show 47.0% of its housing units were built in 1979 or earlier. We work on 1920s pier-and-beam bungalows in the Heights and Montrose. We also work on postwar ranch homes built on slabs. Those two foundations change how our master plumbers move a shower drain, and what gets opened to reach it.

On a slab house, the shower drain runs down through the concrete floor. To move it, our crew cuts a trench in the slab to the new drain spot. Our master plumbers run the new line, and our crew patches the concrete before the pan goes in. A pier-and-beam house sits up off the ground. There, our master plumbers reach the drain from the crawl space under the house. A City of Houston historic district report calls raised pier and beam foundations characteristic of historic Houston Heights.

Older plumbing can turn up once a wall is open. Angi's tub-to-shower conversion guide warns that a conversion may mean taking a wall back to the studs. That way the whole area can be waterproofed. It adds that this can reveal hidden plumbing problems, so leave room in the budget. If the open wall shows old supply lines, our master plumbers can replace them. Sometimes that leads to a whole-house repipe.

FAQ

Shower Remodeling Questions, Answered

Common questions about shower remodeling across Houston, inside Loop 610 and out. Don't see yours? Give us a call and ask.

How much does a shower remodel cost in Houston?
Angi's 2026 cost guide puts the national average for a shower remodel at $7,000. The same guide says most homeowners spend $2,000 to $9,000. Both are national figures. Moving the drain or the valve adds to the total. Our guide to walk-in shower cost in Houston breaks down the line items, and our estimate is free.
Will a walk-in shower fit where my tub is now?
It can, because the City of Houston's code has an exception written for that swap. When a standard 30 by 60 inch tub is replaced, the shower may be as narrow as 25 inches inside. It needs at least 1,300 square inches of floor area. Our own crew tears out the tub, and our master plumbers move the drain and valve where needed.
Do I need a permit to remodel a shower in Houston?
It depends on the work. The City of Houston's residential repairs guideline lists tiling as finish work that needs no permit. The same guideline says any replacement of plumbing fixtures requires permits. When the job needs a plumbing permit, our master plumbers pull it. A City plumbing inspector must approve the work before the project is finalized.
Can you replace an old fiberglass shower with a tile shower?
Yes. Our own crew tears out the old fiberglass or acrylic insert. Then our crew builds a new pan with a waterproof membrane and waterproofs every wall behind the tile. The City of Houston's code requires a flood test of the pan, and it happens before any tile goes on. If the drain or valve has to move, our master plumbers move it.
Will my water heater keep up with a bigger shower?
It depends on how many gallons per minute the new shower uses. The EPA says standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons per minute. WaterSense labeled showerheads use no more than 2.0 gallons per minute. Our master plumbers add up the flow of the fixtures that run at once. If your water heater falls short, we also handle tankless water heater installation.
Can you replace my tub without turning it into a shower?
Yes. We replace tubs and tub-shower combos in the same spot. Our own crew tears out the old tub and sets the new one. Our master plumbers connect it to the drain and the valve. If the walls get new tile, our crew sets it and patches what the work opened.
