Concrete
We pour driveways, walkways, and patios across Houston, plus stamped concrete and overlays. Formed, reinforced, and finished for the clay under this city.
Concrete driveways in Houston start with the ground under them. We pour new driveways and replace cracked or broken ones. We also widen or extend driveways that no longer fit the cars at the house. Our own crew breaks out the old slab and hauls it off, then grades and compacts the base. We set the steel and forms, then pour and finish the new driveway and the walk that ties into it.
VCS Construction and Remodeling has been contracting in Houston since 2007, and we pour our own concrete. The same company that breaks out your old driveway forms and finishes the new one. We pour concrete driveways across Harris County, in places like Houston Heights, Montrose, River Oaks and Bellaire. Estimates are free at (713) 828-3097, and we set a date after the estimate.

Every concrete driveway rests on the soil under it, so the job starts below the slab. The USDA says Lake Charles clay is found in Southeast Texas, mainly between the Colorado and Trinity rivers. Houston sits in that band. When dry, that clay cracks 1/2 to 2 inches wide at the surface. On a replacement, the old slab is broken out and hauled off first. Then we grade and compact the base before any steel goes down.
We set the thickness for the vehicles that use the driveway. The Michigan Concrete Association, an industry group, recommends a minimum of 4 inches in its 2026 driveway guidelines. When traffic will include delivery vehicles, the same guide sets the minimum at 5 inches. Our crew sets the steel before the pour. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) says wire mesh will not prevent cracking. It tends to keep cracks and joints from opening up.
Houston weather shapes two parts of the job. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Bush Intercontinental put Houston's rain at about 52 inches a year. The Michigan Concrete Association calls for a minimum slope of 1/8 inch per foot for drainage. We slope each driveway away from the house and the garage. Heat is the other part. The association says concrete hardens faster as temperatures rise. It recommends a concrete temperature of 95 F or below at placement. NOAA's normal August high there is 94.9 F.
NRMCA calls joints pre-planned cracks. It puts maximum joint spacing at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness. That is about 10 feet for a 4-inch slab, and NRMCA recommends no more than 15 feet. We lay out control joints on a plan before the pour. NRMCA also says isolation joints separate driveways from sidewalks, garage slabs, stairs and other fixed points. We isolate the new slab from the garage floor, the walk and the curb.
The City of Houston splits a driveway in two. In the City's Residential One-Stop guide, dated February 2026, the word driveway refers to the approach only. Flatwork is the paving inside the property line. The approach sits in the City right of way, between the street and your lot. The City's Residential Driveway, Sidewalk, or Curb and Gutter Permit covers new, replaced and extended driveways. Its authority is Chapter 40 of the Houston Code of Ordinances.
Work on the approach must follow the approved, traffic-stamped site plan to pass the City's inspections. The City inspects before and after the concrete is placed. Before that first inspection, the driveway and sidewalk must be fully formed. Where the street has open ditches, the culvert must be installed too. Inspections are scheduled for the next business day, and the City does not do same-day inspections. Our crew forms and pours the approach to that plan.
The City's traffic review checklist adds layout rules. The driveway must keep a consistent width within the right of way. It must stay straight and unobstructed at least 20 feet past the property line, or 17 feet with a garage. The driveway's curb radius cannot extend past the property line. On a street with open ditches, the minimum driveway culvert is 24 inches. An equivalent elliptical or arch pipe is allowed. If a bigger pipe sits upstream or downstream, the culvert must match it.
Some lots need more. In a mapped floodplain, the City also issues a Single Family Residential Driveway floodplain development permit under Chapter 19. That permit carries pre-construction and final inspections. Houston has no zoning, and the City says development is governed by ordinance codes. The Houston Permitting Center says to check your subdivision's deed restrictions first. It warns that permits may be revoked for deed restriction violations. Bellaire, West University Place, Pearland and the Memorial Villages run their own permit offices.
The City's One-Stop guide treats a driveway replacement and a widened or extended driveway as different projects. Remove and replace means removing an existing damaged driveway and installing a new one with the same dimensions. The City says remove-and-replace driveways for existing houses can go through its One-Stop review. A new approach, a driveway extension or new flatwork is submitted with a site plan. It also needs a completed Impervious Cover Worksheet, Form CE-1207.
Widening or extending a driveway adds paving to the lot, and the City counts that cover. Its One-Stop guide lists sidewalks and driveways as permit-exempt under Section R105.2 for interior flatwork up to 65% impervious area. That exemption comes from the City of Houston 2021 amendments. A wider driveway raises that percentage on the lot. We build a widened or extended section the same way as a new driveway, from the base up.
A standard concrete driveway usually gets a simple broom finish. A driveway can also take a stamped pattern, color in the concrete or an exposed aggregate surface. We pour patterned and stamped concrete, and the slab under any finish needs the same base and joints. An overlay can resurface a sound driveway or patio that only looks tired. Our page on stamped concrete and overlays covers that decorative work, plus patios and walkways.

VCS did an outstanding job on our kitchen and master bed/bath remodel. What made them different was their attention to detail from start to finish. Trey would meet with us on a weekly basis to review completed work as well as scheduling and work for the following week. His team was extremely professional, knowledgable, and courteous. They went above and beyond for us and the quality of work was fantastic. They focused and kept to the scheduled timeline. I would highly recommend VCS Construction and Remodeling.
VCS Construction was as professional as it gets. Our exterior project was completed on budget and on time with the attention to detail on quality. Any issues or concerns were handled quickly and professionally. I would recommend them to everyone.
We hired VCS for a custom garage buildout and they delivered to the highest degree. Trey went over countless ideas for what I wanted and I could not be happier with the outcome. He is a well respected car guy in the community so he does know his stuff when it comes to custom Garages. Well Done!
