Walk-In Shower Cost in Houston: 2026 Prices and Tub Conversions

Most homeowners spend $6,000 to $12,000 on a walk-in shower, per Angi’s cost guide updated July 15, 2026. Angi puts the 2026 national average at $9,000, and HomeGuide prices a custom tiled walk-in at $3,500 to $15,000. Every range in this guide is a national figure, and each one names its source.

VCS Construction and Remodeling has contracted in Houston since 2007, and we build a lot of custom bathrooms. Our shower remodeling work covers tub-to-shower conversions and walk-in showers with tile and glass. Master plumbers on our team move the drain and the valve. Our own crew builds and waterproofs the pan and the walls, then sets the tile.

How much does a walk-in shower cost?

It depends on whether you rework an old shower or put in a new one. Angi’s shower remodel guide puts the 2026 national average at $7,000, and most homeowners spend $2,000 to $9,000. HomeAdvisor lists the same $7,000 average and the same $2,000 to $9,000 range.

A new installation runs higher in Angi’s data. Its shower installation guide puts the 2026 national average at $8,205, based on 7,466 verified projects. Most homeowners pay $4,448 to $12,374.

These guides price the shower alone. If the rest of the room is changing too, our bathroom remodel cost guide covers whole-room budgets.

How much does a tub-to-shower conversion cost?

Angi’s tub-to-shower guide, updated July 8, 2026, says converting a tub to a shower costs $3,000 on average. It can go as low as $1,500 or up to $15,000. Converting a tub into a custom, tiled walk-in shower costs $3,500 to $15,000 in the same guide.

Three more national guides price the same job. HomeAdvisor puts a conversion at around $3,000, with most projects from $1,500 to $8,000. This Old House says $2,000 to $12,000, from its 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners. HomeGuide gives the same $2,000 to $12,000 range.

Conversions often turn up extra costs. In This Old House’s survey, people who did one reported at least one hidden cost nearly 70% of the time. The same survey found 37% of homeowners went over their renovation budget.

Angi says a conversion may mean taking a wall back to the studs so the whole area is waterproof. That can reveal hidden plumbing problems, so keep room in the budget. HomeAdvisor says removing mold and mildew found during a shower remodel starts at $500.

What drives the price of a walk-in shower?

Each layer of a walk-in shower has its own price. Angi says labor accounts for around 40% to 60% of the total. The table gives national ranges, and each row names its source.

Line item (source)National range
Removing the old shower unit (HomeGuide)$70 to $800
Removing and disposing of an old tub (Angi)$150 to $300
Demolition and haul-away (HomeAdvisor)$300 to $500
New shower pan (HomeGuide)$900 to $2,300
Waterproof membrane for an average shower (HomeGuide)$300 to $1,350
Sheet membrane under the pan (Angi)$500 to $1,000
Liquid membrane under the pan (Angi)$50 to $800
Moving a drain line (This Old House)$900 to $1,100
Shower plumbing additions (Angi)$600 to $1,600
Shower valve replacement (HomeGuide)$225 to $575
Installing or upgrading a valve (This Old House)$700 to $1,200
Custom tile installation in a shower (Angi)$1,800 to $6,800
Glass shower door (Angi)$550 to $1,400
Frameless glass enclosure (HomeAdvisor)$1,000 to $3,300

The guides group these costs in different ways. HomeGuide prices plumbing and waterproofing together at $600 to $6,500.

The glass goes in after the tile. This Old House prices frameless glass doors at $1,200 to $3,000. It says frameless doors use thicker tempered glass, typically 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick.

Is a prefab stall cheaper than a custom tile shower?

Yes, by a wide margin in Angi’s guide. Most manufactured shower stalls cost $700 to $3,000. Custom walk-in showers cost $4,200 to $8,500 in the same guide.

HomeGuide says converting a tub to a tiled shower requires a new custom tile pan. It prices that pan at $900 to $3,500, with the base, tile and labor.

Angi says going curbless requires a custom build and a custom shower pan priced at around $2,500. We cover curbless roll-in showers on our accessible bathroom remodeling page.

Some companies sell one-day showers and bath liners. When you compare bids, ask what each one puts under the finish.

Does a slab or pier-and-beam house change the price?

It changes how the drain gets moved. Postwar ranch homes in Houston sit on concrete slabs. On a slab, moving a shower drain means cutting the concrete floor and patching it.

The 1920s bungalows in the Heights and Montrose sit on pier and beam. A City of Houston historic district report calls raised pier and beam foundations characteristic of historic Houston Heights houses. Under those houses, our master plumbers reach the drain from the crawl space.

This Old House says moving a drain line can cost $900 to $1,100. HomeAdvisor says moving the shower or altering plumbing adds $600 to $3,500. A shower that stays where the tub was skips the drain move.

Many Houston homes were built before 1980. Census Bureau figures (ACS 2024 5-year) show 47.0% of Houston’s housing units were built in 1979 or earlier. The median year a housing unit was built is 1982. Our master plumbers move or replace the drain and the valve when a job calls for it.

Should you replace the tub instead?

HomeAdvisor says homeowners spend $2,104 to $9,756 to replace a bathtub, with most projects averaging $5,929. That average sits between Angi’s $3,000 conversion average and its $9,000 walk-in average.

Angi notes that some buyers prefer to have at least one bathtub in the home. If yours is the only tub in the house, weigh that before you convert it. We replace tubs and tub-shower combos in the same spot, and freestanding tubs are part of our bathroom remodeling work.

What does Houston’s code require of a new shower?

Houston’s current residential codes took effect January 1, 2024. The City’s amended code sets every shower compartment at no less than 1,024 square inches of interior floor area. It must be at least 30 inches across at its narrowest, measured from the finished interior surfaces. A 32 by 32 inch shower comes to exactly 1,024 square inches.

Houston’s code has its own exception for tub-to-shower conversions. When a standard 30 by 60 inch bathtub is replaced, the shower may be as narrow as 25 inches. That is measured at the finished interior, and the shower needs at least 1,300 square inches of floor area.

The City’s code sets the shower drain outlet at no less than 2 inches in diameter. Hinged shower doors must open outward. Houston also adds a flood test for the pan. It is filled with water up to the rough threshold to test it for watertightness, before the tile goes on.

Tile alone needs no City permit. The Houston Permitting Center’s residential repairs guideline (Form CE-1058) puts tiling on its no-permit list. The same guideline says any replacement of plumbing fixtures or electrical fixtures requires permits. Plumbing permit work must be inspected and approved by a City plumbing inspector before the project is finalized.

If the remodel moves walls or changes the layout, it goes on the City’s Residential Remodel Permit. The Houston Permitting Center lists its processing time at 1 to 15 business days, with plan review and inspection.

For a national figure, Angi says to budget $250 to $500 for a walk-in shower permit. Its shower remodel guide puts permits at $50 for minor electrical or plumbing work up to $2,000.

Call VCS Construction and Remodeling at (713) 828-3097 for a free estimate on your shower. Master plumbers on our team pull the plumbing permit, and we meet the City inspector. Our own crew builds the pan and sets the tile. We are based near downtown Houston, and we set a date after the estimate.
