Should You Choose Gas or Electric Tankless?
Gas fits most Houston retrofits. Electric fits homes with a strong panel, or new builds wired for the load from the start.
A whole-house gas unit burns up to 199,000 BTU while it runs. A.O. Smith and Rinnai list 3 or 4 inch vents in stainless steel or approved plastic for these models. Your old tank vent rarely works as is. Some homes also need a larger gas line to feed the burner.
Electric tankless pulls serious power. A 36 kW whole-house model draws about 150 amps at full load, split across three or four big breakers. Many older Houston panels with 100 or 150 amp service cannot carry that. Those homes need electrical panel replacement before the heater goes in.

At $95 a year, the fuel savings repay the price gap slowly. Buy tankless for endless hot water and long service life first. Treat the utility savings as a bonus.
How Long Does a Tankless Water Heater Last?
About 20 years or more, per the Department of Energy. Standard storage tanks last 10 to 15 years, so one tankless unit can outlive two tanks.
The design explains the gap. Tanks hold water against a steel liner, and sediment plus rust wear them out. A tankless unit stores nothing, so corrosion moves slower. Houston water still leaves scale in the heat exchanger, and a yearly flush clears it.
When Does a Standard Tank Still Make More Sense?
