Slab Leak Repair Cost in Houston: 2026 Prices by Repair Method
Slab leak repair averages $2,280, and most homeowners spend $630 to $4,400, per HomeAdvisor’s cost guide updated in June 2026. Angi puts the 2026 national average at the same $2,280, including leak detection. Where your house lands depends on the repair method and on what sits on the floor above the leak.
We are VCS Construction and Remodeling, contracting in Houston since 2007. For slab leak repair in Houston, master plumbers on our team handle the plumbing side. Our own crew pours back the concrete and repairs the floors a dig touches. One contractor runs the whole job, and the estimate is free.
How much does slab leak repair cost by repair method?
The method sets the bill, because each one handles the pipe a different way. HomeGuide puts digging into the foundation and replacing the damaged pipe at $700 to $5,000 on average. A reroute can cost less or more than that, depending on which guide you read. Each row below names its source.
| Line item | National market range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Slab leak detection | $150 to $400 | HomeAdvisor |
| Slab leak detection, average | $280 | Angi |
| Pinhole leak repair | $150 to $800 | HomeAdvisor |
| Spot repair: dig into the foundation and replace the damaged pipe | $700 to $5,000 | HomeGuide |
| Drain line leak repair | $800 to $5,000 | HomeAdvisor |
| Reroute the plumbing lines under a slab | $600 to $4,000 | HomeAdvisor |
| Close off the old lines and reroute the plumbing | $3,900 to $7,500 | HomeGuide |
| Concrete slab repair | $300 to $6,750 | HomeAdvisor |
| Build-back of the floors and finishes over the opening | $300 to $10,000 or more | Angi |
Labor is part of every row. HomeGuide says plumbers charge $45 to $150 per hour to fix slab leaks. These are national figures from each named guide, and your own number comes from the estimate.
What drives the bill in a Houston house?
Four things move the number: which line leaks, the floor over it, how many leaks there are, and pipe age. A supply line carries water under pressure to your fixtures. A drain line carries used water out to the sewer. HomeAdvisor prices pinhole leak repair at $150 to $800 and a drain line leak repair at $800 to $5,000.
The floor over the leak can cost more than the pipe. Angi puts build-back at $300 to $10,000 or more, depending on what materials sit above the access point. Build-back means restoring the floors and finishes over the opening. Our own crew handles the build-back, including tile and cabinets.
Each leak is its own repair. Two leaks in two rooms can mean two openings and two patches.
Pipe age matters too. Per the Census Bureau, nearly half of Houston’s homes and apartments were built in 1979 or earlier. HomeGuide lists corroded cast iron or other metal pipes among the causes of slab leaks.
Angi says cast iron can last between 50 and 75 years. If your house drains through cast iron, ask whether replacing cast iron drain pipe makes more sense than a patch.
Should you repair the leak or reroute the line?
It depends on which line leaks and what sits above it. A spot repair fits one leak we can reach through the floor. We cut an opening in the slab, replace that section of pipe and pour the concrete back.
A tunnel fits a drain line under finished rooms. Our crew digs in from outside and under the foundation to reach the pipe. The tunnel method keeps the floors in place, and we backfill the tunnel when the pipe is done.
A reroute fits a supply line. We abandon the leaking line in the slab and run a new one overhead through the attic. HomeAdvisor puts rerouting plumbing lines under a slab at $600 to $4,000. HomeGuide puts rerouting the plumbing at $3,900 to $7,500 on average.
When leaks keep coming back in the same supply lines, one reroute may not be the last. That is the point to ask about a whole-house repipe, which runs new PEX lines overhead through the attic.
Will homeowners insurance pay for a slab leak in Texas?
It depends on your policy and the cause of the leak, per Angi. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says most policies cover damage from a sudden and accidental release of water. Most policies don’t cover damage from a continuous water leak, and most don’t cover wear and tear, per TDI.
TDI also says most home policies don’t cover water damage from gradual leaks or seepage. It lists damage to foundations or slabs among common endorsements, the add-ons you buy for extra coverage. Backup of sewers or drains is on the same list. Read your policy or ask your agent before the work starts.
What does the City of Houston cover when you have a leak?
The city fixes leaks on its side of the meter and can credit part of your water bill. Per Houston 311, a leak on the line from the meter to the street is the city’s repair. Any leak between the meter and the house is yours to repair, and 311 says to hire a plumber.
Either way, TDI says to stop the water as soon as you can. Know how to turn it off at the main valve.
The bill credit is the City of Houston’s Leak Adjustment, Sec. 47-74. It gives a water and wastewater credit for up to three consecutive months within a 12-month period. It applies to water lost through a defect in the customer’s water line.
Timing sets the size of the credit. It covers 100% of the water charge above your average use if the repair is made within 30 days. It drops to 75% if the repair is made within 60 days, and 50% after that. The clock runs from the leak start date or the leak notification date.
Houston Public Works says the ordinance changes approved in December 2023 give a 100% credit on excess wastewater charges. Its reason: leaked water usually does not go back through the sewer.
The city must receive your application within six months of the repair date. Proof should show the repair date, address, type of repair and cost. A plumber’s statement or bill works as proof. So does a parts receipt or a signed written statement.
What do Houston permits and inspections add to the job?
A permit is one of the smaller line items. HomeGuide puts a plumbing permit at $30 to $500, and it says many contractors include it in their price. In Houston, a master plumber registered with the city buys the plumbing permit, per the Houston Permitting Center.
The center also says a plumbing inspector must inspect and approve all work that needs a plumbing permit. That happens before the project is finalized. Master plumbers on our team pull the permit, and we meet the inspector. Bellaire, West University Place, Pearland and the Memorial Villages run their own permit offices.
How do we find the leak before anyone opens the slab?
We narrow it down first, with the goal of opening the slab in one place. On the supply side, our master plumbers isolate the lines and pressure test them until one run loses pressure. On the drain side, they run a sewer camera through the drain lines to see where the pipe is broken.
This Old House plumbing expert Richard Trethewey recommends video inspections to locate slab leaks. This Old House says that limits how much of the slab needs opening. Finding the leak is its own line item. HomeAdvisor puts slab leak detection at $150 to $400, and Angi puts the average at $280.
