That sits close to HomeAdvisor’s national average of $26,943, with a typical range of $14,589 to $41,550. A cosmetic refresh can stay under $15,000. A full gut with a new layout runs $70,000 and up.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Houston?
Houston pricing runs a little friendlier than the national tables. Local guides put construction labor here roughly 7 to 15 percent below the national average, which takes some sting out of the same scope of work.

What part of the kitchen costs the most?
Cabinets, by a wide margin. Cost guides put cabinetry at 29 to 40 percent of the total budget, more than any other line. HomeAdvisor prices cabinet projects from $2,000 to $28,000, and a custom package can pass that. One Houston cabinet supplier also reports imported cabinet lines up 15 to 25 percent since mid 2025 after new tariffs, so cabinet quotes deserve a close look this year.
After cabinets, the big lines are labor, appliances, and countertops. Countertop installation averages $1,800 to $4,400 nationally, and appliance packages run from about $2,500 to well past $15,000. Labor’s share depends on how the bid counts it, anywhere from a quarter to half of the project.
What drives the price up in a Houston house?
Layout changes cost the most. Moving plumbing, gas, or electrical for a new layout adds $3,000 to $12,000 before finishes, because the trades and the patching stack on top of each other.
The age of the house matters just as much here. Houston homes built before the 1970s often still carry galvanized steel supply lines and cast iron drains, both at the end of their service lives. Do you need a permit to remodel a kitchen in Houston?
Cosmetic work needs no permit. The city’s residential permitting guidance exempts painting, tiling, carpet, and cabinet and countertop replacement.
Moving anything is different. Relocating or adding plumbing fixtures takes a plumbing permit, altering wiring or adding outlets takes an electrical permit, and moving walls takes a building permit. Remodel permits run through the Houston Permitting Center, and the trade permits are pulled by licensed contractors, which is how we handle it on our own jobs.
Houston has no zoning, but many subdivisions carry deed restrictions the city can enforce. Interior kitchen work rarely trips them. It still pays to check yours before a project that changes the outside of the house.
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
Houston contractor guides put small remodels at 2 to 3 weeks of construction, mid-size projects at 3 to 5 weeks, and full renovations at 8 to 12 weeks. The quiet schedule-killer is lead time. Custom cabinets run 8 to 16 weeks from order, and countertops need 2 to 4 weeks after template, so the calendar is longer than the construction window.
