Houston's older neighborhoods are full of houses wearing their original wiring. The Heights and Montrose bungalows date to the early 1900s, and postwar ranch homes fill Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, and Meyerland. Wiring from those eras was sized for a radio and a few lamps. It was never meant to carry a modern kitchen, big AC loads, and a wall of screens.
Age shows up in specific ways. Two-prong outlets mean the circuits have no ground. Homes wired between 1965 and 1973 can carry aluminum branch wiring, which CPSC research links to overheating at loose connections. Cloth-insulated wiring turns brittle, and the oldest houses can still hide knob and tube in the attic. Flickering lights, warm switch plates, and a breaker that keeps tripping are the everyday signs.
A rewire replaces those circuits with new copper wiring, grounded outlets, and GFCI protection where today's code requires it. The City of Houston requires an electrical permit for this work, and only registered master electricians can pull one. Our electricians handle the permit and meet the inspector. Rough wiring gets inspected before any wall closes.
The reason to hire a remodeling contractor for a rewire is what happens after that inspection. Rewiring a finished house means openings in nearly every room. Our own crew patches the drywall, matches the texture, and paints. An electrical-only company leaves that repair work to you.
Not every electrical job is a full rewire. Most calls are smaller: a bank of new outlets in a home office, switches that crackle, a dining room chandelier waiting in its box. Our electricians handle that list in a single visit when the scope allows. Older homes never have enough outlets, because the code they were built under asked for so few. We add grounded outlets where you actually use them, on new circuits when the load calls for it. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, and outdoor plugs get GFCI protection to meet current code. Ungrounded two-prong outlets get real fixes, not just new faces.
Fixture installation covers the finish side of the trade. We hang chandeliers and pendants, swap builder lights for fixtures you picked, and install ceiling fans on fan-rated boxes. Recessed lighting goes in during remodels and as its own project. Undercabinet lighting is a regular add in our kitchen remodels.
Every fixture change is a chance to catch problems in the box behind it. Our electricians check the wiring they touch and flag what they find. Scorched insulation and loose connections get fixed, not covered up. That habit comes from working in old houses.
Some electrical projects reach past the walls. If your power still arrives on a line drooping across the yard, we can run it underground in conduit instead. New circuits are the other common request. A garage gym, a workshop with real tools, or an EV charger each want their own circuit, and sometimes a subpanel. We wire garage conversions regularly, and generator hookups come up after every storm season. Each of those loads gets checked against your panel before anything is promised.
Houston weather figures into the planning. Humidity is hard on outdoor connections, so exterior outlets get weather-rated boxes and in-use covers. After Beryl put much of the city in the dark in July 2024, generator inlet requests became routine. Wiring one safely means a transfer switch or interlock, never a cord run to a dryer outlet.
