The Houston pattern is familiar. The lawn burns in August unless it is watered constantly, thins out under the trees no matter what you do, and turns to mud when the rain finally comes. The corner where the dog runs is dirt by June. Artificial turf ends that cycle in the spots where grass keeps losing.
Shade yards are the clearest case. Under a mature live oak canopy, grass never gets the sun it needs, and every spring's new sod thins out again by fall. Turf does not care. It reads green year-round in full shade, which is why so many turf projects start in a shaded back yard.
Water is the second argument. A real lawn in a Houston summer stays green only with steady irrigation, and that shows up on the water bill every month. Turf needs a rinse, not a schedule. There is no mowing, edging, fertilizing, or weekly lawn service to pay for.
Turf is honest about its trade-offs too. It runs hotter than grass in direct summer sun, so placement matters: shaded yards and areas with afternoon cover feel best barefoot, and lighter colors run cooler. Turf fails at the base, not the blades. Grass carpet laid over graded dirt looks fine for a month, then Houston rain finds every low spot and the surface ripples and puddles. Our installation starts with excavation: the old grass and the top few inches of soil come out, and a compacted aggregate base goes in.
Drainage decides everything on clay. Water does not soak into Houston gumbo the way it soaks into sand, so the base has to carry water somewhere useful. We grade the base to drain away from the house, and the turf backing itself is perforated so rain passes through instead of sheeting off.
The visible details are the finish work. Seams get joined so they disappear instead of reading as stripes. Edges are secured so they never curl or pull loose. Infill goes in brushed between the blades, which stands the fibers up, weighs the turf down, and keeps the surface stable underfoot.
Pet turf gets its own build, with infill made for pets that drains and rinses clean instead of holding odor. Putting greens go the other direction: a dense, short pile rolled smooth, with fringe around it if you want it. Play areas under swing sets can take padding underneath for softer falls.
Most projects are backyards, but turf earns its keep in more places. Narrow side yards that never grew grass. Front lawns in deep shade. Courtyards and townhome patios inside the Loop with no room for a mower. Dog runs along a fence line, and putting greens where a back corner was going unused.
Turf also pairs naturally with hardscape. A stamped patio with turf around it reads finished from every window, and turf ribbons between pavers make an edge that never needs trimming. We pour the concrete side ourselves, which is what makes one contractor for the whole yard work.
On cost, Angi's 2026 guide puts artificial grass installation at a national average near $5,800, with most projects between $1,300 and $15,000 and installed pricing typically $6 to $22 per square foot. Yard size drives most of it. Turf grade, curves, and access do the rest.
