Complete Concrete Services Across Houston

VCS Construction and Remodeling is a concrete contractor for Houston homes. We have contracted here since 2007, and concrete runs through most of what we build. Driveways, walkways, patios, and slabs all come through our crew. We also pour the decorative side: patterned and stamped concrete, and overlays that resurface tired slabs.

Concrete in Houston is a fight with the soil. The clay under this city swells when it rains and shrinks hard in August, and flatwork that ignores that movement cracks early. We prepare the base, set the steel, and cut control joints to manage where the movement goes. Estimates are free, and the number is (713) 828-3097.

Concrete Driveways Built for Houston Clay

A driveway fails from below. Houston's clay soil swells with every rain and shrinks in every drought, and a slab poured on badly prepared clay moves with it. We grade the ground, compact the base, and set steel reinforcement before any concrete arrives. The finished slab sheds water away from the house instead of holding it against the garage.

Control joints are the other half of crack management. Concrete moves as it cures, and joints decide where that shows up. We cut them on a plan, so movement follows straight lines instead of wandering across the middle of the slab. Thickness matters too, and a driveway that carries a truck gets sized for it.

Replacing a driveway usually means demolition first. We break out the old slab, haul the concrete off, and fix what the base needs before the new pour. Tree roots that lifted the old driveway get addressed, not buried again. Then the new driveway is formed, poured, and finished in one planned sequence.

The section between the street and your property line is the driveway approach, and it sits in the city right of way. Replacing it takes a City of Houston permit with a traffic-approved site plan, and the city inspects before and after the pour. Houston issues those permits only to bonded contractors. We handle that paperwork as part of the job.

Stamped Concrete, Patterned Finishes, and Overlays

Plain gray is not the only way to pour. Stamped concrete presses a pattern into fresh concrete, so a patio or driveway reads as stone, slate, or brick at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Color can be mixed through the concrete or worked into the surface. The result is a slab that looks placed piece by piece and pours as one.

A concrete overlay solves a different problem. If your existing patio or driveway is structurally sound but tired, an overlay resurfaces it with a thin bonded layer instead of a full tear-out. Overlays can be stamped and colored like new decorative concrete. The base slab has to be sound, and we will tell you honestly if yours is past saving.

Patios are where the decorative options earn their keep. A stamped patio ties into a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen, or the shaded seating area a Houston backyard actually needs. We build patios inside larger backyard projects and as standalone pours. Pairing a new patio with artificial turf around it turns a mud yard into a finished space.

Walkways and front steps round out the flatwork list. A cracked, heaved walkway is a trip hazard and the first thing a visitor sees. We pour new walks with the same base prep as a driveway, scaled down. Steps get formed to consistent riser heights, which is what makes them feel right underfoot.

What Concrete Work Costs in Houston

Driveway pricing tracks size and scope. Angi's 2026 cost guide puts concrete driveways at $8 to $20 per square foot, with a national average around $6,400. Demolition of an existing slab, base repair, and extra thickness for heavy vehicles move the number. A straight replacement prices differently from a widened or extended driveway.

Decorative finishes carry their own range. Concrete Network's 2026 pricing puts plain gray flatwork at $5 to $8 per square foot and decorative work at $8 to $21, depending on pattern and color. One stamp pattern with one color sits at the low end. Multiple patterns, borders, and hand-applied color climb from there.

New concrete also counts toward your lot's impervious cover. On Houston lots up to 15,000 square feet, city rules require detention once impervious cover passes 65 percent of the lot. A big new driveway or patio can cross that line on a small lot. We run that math during the estimate, the same way we do on our home additions.

Weather and cure time shape the schedule. Fresh concrete wants moderate temperatures, so summer pours start early in the morning. Foot traffic is fine within a day or two, but keep vehicles off a new driveway for about a week while it gains strength. We give you the timeline with the estimate, and the estimate is free.

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Houston?
Angi's 2026 cost guide puts concrete driveways between $8 and $20 per square foot, with a national average near $6,400. Tearing out an existing driveway adds demolition and haul-off. Approach work in the city right of way adds permit and inspection steps. We measure your driveway and put a firm number on it, and the estimate is free.
Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Houston?
It splits at your property line. Flatwork inside the line is one kind of project. The approach, the section between the street and your property line, sits in the city right of way and takes a City of Houston driveway permit with a traffic-approved plan and inspections before and after the pour. The city issues those permits only to bonded contractors. We handle the process as part of the job.
What is the difference between stamped concrete and pavers?
Stamped concrete is one continuous slab with a pattern pressed in, while pavers are individual units set on a base. Stamped concrete usually costs less than natural stone and pours as a single planned job. Pavers can be lifted and reset later; a slab cannot. On Houston clay, both live or die by the base prep underneath, which is where we put the work.
Can you resurface my old patio instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. A concrete overlay bonds a thin new layer over the existing slab and can be stamped or colored like new decorative concrete, without demolition. Concrete Network's 2026 pricing puts most decorative work at $8 to $21 per square foot. The catch is the base: a slab with structural cracks or settlement will telegraph through an overlay. We look first and tell you which side yours is on.
Why do Houston driveways crack, and what prevents it?
The clay soil. It swells when wet, shrinks when dry, and the slab above moves with it. Prevention is base compaction, steel reinforcement, correct thickness, and control joints cut on a plan so movement follows the joints. Hairline cracking is in concrete's nature, and joints are how a driveway keeps looking right for years anyway.
